Microsoft Integrating JQuery with VS

Someone in the blogosphere (can't remember who) had recently said they would like to see Microsoft start working with open source projects, include it in their products and yet leave it unchanged and open source, all the while contributing back to the original project. Well, they're going to include JQuery in Visual Studio going forward as well as other products. It will have IntelliSense support, too! This is great news from Microsoft and hopefully the beginning of much more support for open source projects. The announcement by Scott Guthrie is at http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/09/28/jquery-and-microsoft.aspx Here's another announcement by a member of...

Thank you, Apple

I've had something happen twice now, on two computers (both running Vista) when installing iTunes 7.7.  The installer runs just fine and when it's done, it tells me "Your software is up-to-date."  The problem?  My task bar has completely disappeared.  First time it happened (at home this weekend), I thought Vista had just crapped out.  After the same thing happened on my PC at work, I realized that the common denominator between when it happened at home the other day and at work today was the fact that I was updating iTunes using the Apple Software Update. At home I solved...

Dell Inspiron 1720 Install Freezing

I recently ordered a Dell Inspiron 1720.  After I got it, the first thing I did was to reinstall the OS (Window Vista Home Premium) to really clear out the crap that Dell installs with it.  Uninstalling the software wasn't clean enough for me.  When I did, I ran into a problem with the reinstall where it would get to the fifth step, "Completing Installation", freeze and just sit there looking at me.  The progress bar stopped and nothing happened. After trying it a second time and having that fail, I started considering options.  Then I remembered having seen on the...

Outlook Text Size

I stumbled upon a great feature in Outlook the other day. While in the compose mode, I used the "Ctrl-Mouse Wheel Scroll Up" feature to see if it would enlarge the text (as it does in IE or Firefox) and it did, which is what I expected.  (FYI, my font is "Calibri 11".)  I composed the message and hit "Send". Later, when I went to compose another new message, the body text was still enlarged!  I didn't expect it to retain that setting between messages but it did.  I find that to be a plus. And the really odd thing?  Even though the...

Virtual PC Differencing Disks

This post is for me as much as it is for others.  Maybe by writing it, I'll finally remember how. Because I do it so infrequently, I can't remember how to get set up Virtual PC to use a differencing disk without getting the error: "The startup disk could not be written to.  The virtual hard disk may be marked read only.  The virtual hard disk has been mounted read-only.  Most operating systems cannot boot with a read-only startup disk." The answer is easy and it makes sense if you think about it.  The short answer is to not have your parent...

Change to iTunes

Since I've had my iPod (almost three years now!), 10000 Maniacs "Like the Weather" had the distinction of being the first song in my iTunes list (when sorted by Artist, the default) and on my iPod.  I just upgraded to iTunes 7.3 and they've now put numbers at the end of the list.  Not sure what prompted the change, but the honor of first in my list is Aaron Tippin's "The Sound of Your Goodbye".  Congrats, Aaron.  Call Apple and thank them.

Inserting hyperlinks in Outlook

Outlook has a great feature that I've recently started taking advantage of.  First, the setup. I have lots of mapped drives - they're mapped to locations I use frequently that others may not have drives mapped to, but I still want to use my mapped drive to put a shortcut in an email.  I used to go to the "standard" mapped drive and get to the document and copy and paste the location into my email.  If there are spaces in that path, the hyperlink would break as soon as there were spaces because Outlook valiantly tried to figure out what...

Strange Error on Virtual PC

Entry updated 2008-02-13... I've figured out the actual cause of error message "The virtual machine is using a video mode that is too large for your monitor" and a way to solve the problem without a reboot.  Consider the following scenario: You have 3 computers: a work PC (a physical machine), a home PC (also a physical machine), and a VPC running on your work PC.  You have a nice big 20" monitor at work and set the video mode on the VPC to a resolution to take advantage of your work PC's display capabilities (say, 1600x1200).  It's capabilities, however, are beyond...

Searches in Outlook 2007

Searches in Outlook 2007, at first glance, have become cumbersome and difficult to use.  That's not really true - you just have to take the time to figure out how they work. My problem was that I use Outlook to help me remember what I worked on in any given day for the purpose of my billing.  What I used to do in Outlook 2003 was search using the advanced search (Ctrl-Shift-F or Tools-->Instant Search-->Advanced Find) , select the "Advanced" tab and enter "From" and a date and "To" and a date to find all emails on a given date.  It...
